Stuff to Do in Kismet and on Fire Island

Fire Island.com includes information on visiting the Lighthouse, the Sunken Forest, Hiking, Wildlife, Birdwatching, Surfing, Boating and Fishing.

Climb to the Top of the Lighthouse
Taking a guided tour up the Lighthouse is something everyone should do at least once. On a clear day you can see the Eiffel Tower!

Tennis
Kismet offers both public and private courts.

Yoga/Pilates
The Kismet Firehouse provides Yoga and Pilates five days a week. The Firehouse is located just behind The Inn. Check the entrance for the schedule.

Live Music
The Kismet Inn offers live music every Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday night, and frequently during the weekends. Surf's Out's live music schedule is usually posted near their entrance.

Democrat Point
Pack a lunch and take bikes all the way out past Field 5, and just keep ridin till ya caint rides no more. Walk down to the western tip of the island where the bay meets the ocean. The dunes are large and healthy, and it’s hard to pinpoint exactly how, but the island just looks more exotic there. Walk back on the other side and then pedal home.

Nude Beach
Just to the west of Kismet is a clothing-optional beach where you can work on your all-over tan. Solo women will likely be asked to have their sunscreen borrowed, or otherwise find themselves on the receiving end of lame pickup lines, often coming from "Donald Ducks"--men with shirts but no pants. Better yet, go in a small group and dispatch with the suit and experience the ocean like every other species on the planet.

Watch the Sunset in Fair Harbor
The Fair Harbor dock is one of the best spots on the island to watch the sunset. Bring a cocktail or a bottle of wine, or pick up a road soda at Le Dock and join the crowd that gathers every night to catch up as the sun goes down. They even clap, which is very sweet and helps prevent the sun from developing and inferiority complex.

Ocean Beach.
Check out Fire Island's largest town where you can shop, eat lunch or have dinner. Take a water taxi, or ride a bike to Lonelyville, lock it up then walk the rest of the way on the beach. Or, if you're feeling it, walk the whole way. It takes less than an hour from Kismet. If you're really feeling it, take the kayaks there on the bay side. A personal recommendation when visiting OB is to drop in on Kenny.

Sunken Forest
A visit to the Sunken Forest is a perfect excursion for an overcast day, as wandering along those boardwalks winding through a canopy of twisting trees in the mist feels otherworldly.

Gay Towns
For a great full-day excursion, take a water taxi to the Sunken Forest, and then visit the two gay towns, Cherry Grove & The Pines. Cherry Grove has a great carnivalesque feel, while the Pines has some outstanding and creative architecture. (Put a bunch of well-heeled gay men in one place and you can imagine the architectural result...)

Anonymous Gay Sex
The patch of federal land just to the west of the Pines is the world-famous “Meat Rack.” If walking from Cherry Grove, you might encounter members of its natural habitat engaging in traditional nonmating rituals. While "Anonynous Gay Sex" seems like a strange thing to add to this list, it's totally doable (if you are) and you never need an appointment.

Veg
If your life is already over-scheduled and involves too many appointments and electronics, just do nothing. Aside from the beach and the bay, there are no shortage of places of natural beauty where you can wile away an hour or an entire afternoon. Saltaire, our neighboring town, has some beautiful houses. Also,  this is one of the widest parts of the island, so it's a great place to wander around. Maybe do this and then check out the sunset at Fair Harbor. We usually sit down to eat at eight, but we can always save dinner for you...
